The Selection Of Recitals Of Nasir Kazmi’s Ghazals Is A
Tribute Not Only To His Memory But Also To The Limitless Possibilities Of The
Ghazal As A Poetic Form A Form Of Which Nasir Was An Outstanding Exponent, And
Within Its Aesthetic Framework, A Remarkable Innovator.
One’s First Infatuation With Nasir’s Poetry Is Most Likely
To Be The Result Of One’s Transportation Into Persian “Miniaturesque”
Landscape. It Is A World Of Muted Tones And Colours , Sparsely Inhabited By A
Few Evocative Yet Visually Precise Symbols. The Moon , The Autumn Leaves, The
Rose Petal , The Vacant Street And The Town – But Wait! Doesn’t All This
Suggest An Extremely Pliable Tool-Kit For Some Cloyingly Romantic Pastiche.
Strangely, Nasir’s Poetry Is Quite The Reverse Of That , For Diluted By The
Narrative Potential Of His Verse. Secondly, What Reverberates Behind This
Romantic Façade Is The Contemporary Urban Scene With All Its Attendant
Implications. What Nasir Has Done Is To Make The Ghazal Carry The Modren Experience
Without Impairing Its Traditional Fabric. In His This Sense Is Not “Art
Nouveau” But Traditional Art In The Sense In Which All Significant Art Is
Always Traditional.
It Was Because Nasir Was A Traditional Poet That He Was
Never Oblivious Of The Lyre When He Composed His Lyrics. He , Better Than
Others, Realised That Ours Is A Poetry Written To Be Sung and What Makes It A
Living Tradition Is Its Close Proximity To Music. Hence Perhaps, The Immense
Popularity Which He Enjoyed With Our Singers. Almost All That Nasir Ever Wrote
Has Been Sung By One Singer Or Another. Side Two Of Disc Presents A Selection
Of His Ghazals Rendered By Such Eminent Voices As Farida Khanum , Firdousi
Begum , Mehdi Hassan And Iqbal Bano.
Side One Of The Disk Is Another Story. This Consists Of
Recitals Of Nasir’s Ghazals By Two Well-Known Poets. They Have Made Their Own
Selection Of Ghazals And Rendered Them In Our Traditional Style Of Poetic Recital.
These Recitals Are Accompanied By The Sitar, Which Is However Never Allowed To
Cramp Or Drown The Voice, And Is There Only To Emphasize The Mood And The
Rhythmic Pattern Of The Poem. These Recitations Were Never Elaborately
Rehearsed Or Orchestrated. That , The Producer Thought , Would Have Told Upon
The Spontaneity And The Integrity Of The Rendition. Purists On Either Side
(Poetry/Music) May Think Otherwise, But I Am Sure Nasir Would Not Have!
